Ordinary glass should not be used for glass splashbacks that are located near cooktops. The following image is an example of an ordinary mirror, which has cracked due to thermal stress caused by the cooktop. This glass should be toughened safety glass to withstand the heat generated by a cooktop. Unfortunately toughened mirrors have a distorted reflection, which can be undesirable at times. Normal coloured splashbacks are also subject to this distortion however is less noticeable.
