There are various types of mirrors that can be used in bathrooms however choosing a mirror which suites the theme of your room is most important. In some circumstances small mirrors can be effective while in many other applications a large bathroom mirror will provide benefits beyond that of a small mirror. The most common shapes of mirrors are square, rectangular or circle but mirrors can be cut to suite almost any shape room or wall.

Most modern designs are frameless, polished edge and extend from wall to wall to provide an open and spacious environment. Current trends have gone away from aluminium and timber framed designs, opting for the seamless look of frameless mirrors. Valiant Glass measure, supply and install custom made mirrors for any application in either domestic or commercial properties.

Thermal breakage or thermal stress in glass is caused by varying amounts of radiant heat absorbed across a single sheet of glass. Large wandering cracks that mysteriously appear in glass panels are the typical consequence of thermal stress. There are various conditions or even types of glass that contribute to a higher risk of thermal breakage. Although in most cases there is no way to avoid the source of thermal stress a variety of solutions are available to prevent the costly fractures that are produced by this phenomenon.

What is thermal stress?

When subjected to radiant heat glass expands, which increases the overall dimensions of the sheet. If a sheet of glass is heated in this manner at an even rate over the entire surface, there is less thermal stress and generally no fracture will take place. The problem stems from variations in heat absorption across the sheet, creating hot zones that want to expand and cold zones that remain in their original state. The pressures caused by thermal stress expose small imperfections that are usually located on the edges of clean cut glass and this is where the cracks begin.

Causes o f Thermal Stress

The main factor that influences thermal breakage is rapid heat absorption of one area of a glass sheet whilst the remainder is not affected. Circumstances which produce this situation include, shadows from awnings or blinds, artificial cooling or heating by air conditioning and even the small amount of glass concealed inside a glazing frame that is not exposed to sunlight. In most cases ordinary annealed glass is more likely to succumb to the pressure of thermal stress. Factors that increase this risk are coloured or tinted glass, reflective coated glass or when solar film applied to existing glass.

Solutions

In the majority of cases thermal stress is unavoidable, however the following are solutions that will prevent thermal breakage from occurring:

Toughened Glass

Toughened or heat strengthened glass should be installed in locations subject to these conditions as it is capable of withstanding exposure to extreme thermal stress.

Ground edges

Annealed glass can be used in most situations, provided that all edges are ground to eliminate any imperfections on the perimeter of these sheets.

No solar film or signage application

The most common cause of thermal breakage to existing glazed panels is the application of coloured or reflective films to the surface of glass. Annealed glass can be in positions affected by sudden increases of radiant heat for many years without any problems. Once a film is applied, it changes the amount of heat retained in the glass rather than passing through it, therefore increasing the likelihood of thermal breakage.

Refrigerated Glass

In rare situations glass shelves or glass doors can be subject to thermal breakage. An example of this would be when a hot plate is placed on a cold refrigerator shelf. The difference in temperature creates enough thermal stress to crack the glass. The best way to avoid this is to use tempered or toughened glass for this application. The refrigerators website at www.refrigerators.org provides in depth tips and reviews on related refrigerator issues.

In recent times various energy efficient products have been developed to satisfy the requirements of governments and local councils throughout Australia to minimise harmful effects on the environment. Improved energy efficient building materials including glass, have reduced the demand on natural resources required for artificial heating and cooling of domestic and commercial properties. By taking advantage of northerly elevations and using improved shading techniques, contemporary architecture has made better use of natural solar heating whilst preventing unwanted heat. Modern design trends have seen a merging of the outside and inside of homes by introducing large areas of glass, which in some situations require high performance glass to achieve higher energy efficient results. The challenge for today’s architects is to find a balance between enhanced design and the use of energy efficient products to create a cost effective solution to building.

UV Transmission

The infiltration of UV radiation through glazed windows and doors is the main cause of deterioration and fading of furnishings and other items within buildings.

Solar Energy Transmission

While natural light and solar energy plays an important part in architectural design, excessive sunlight can be undesirable and cause uncomfortable conditions for occupants. Controlling solar energy transmission is the most important factor in determining the internal climate of homes and commercial buildings.

Glass types – Single glazed

Clear glass

Annealed clear glass has minimal energy efficient properties, therefore requiring other means of shading or protection for the elements. The PVB interlayer in clear laminated glass, blocks most damaging UV radiation but does not aid in reducing solar energy transmission.

Body tinted glass

Body tinted glass absorbs heat generated by the sun and can provide considerably more protection from the elements than normal clear glass. Selection of thickness can influence performance because the thicker the glass the darker the tint, therefore absorbing more heat.

Performance reflective glass

The innovative solar control benefits of performance coated glass significantly reduces solar transmission while simultaneously offering high levels of light transmission. In most cases a reflective coating is fused into the surface of either annealed or laminated glass to provide a durable product. The coated surface must be positioned on the internal surface of the glass as it is more suseptable to damage when located on the external surface.

Low-E

The key feature of Low-E glass is its ability to reduce the amount of heat transferred through glass whilst allowing beneficial wavelengths to enter. In some circumstances Low-E may not be the most practical energy efficient glass product to use, therefore a case by case approach should be utilised to guarantee an appropriate product is used.

Insulated Glass Units / Double glazing

Double glazing or otherwise known as insulated glass units (IGU), consist of a combination of any two types of glass sealed together but separated by an airspace creating a vacuum. A specially designed aluminium spacer containing drying agents ensures no moisture is present within this area. Although IGU’s are the most expensive form of energy efficient glass products, the benefits in terms of decreased winter heat loss, and solar, UV and noise reduction makes this type of glazing a superior alternative.

In addition to traditional interior design techniques, the innovative use of glass products can create the illusion of space. The use of light neutral colours such as white, beige and off-white, for walls, floors and furniture will assist in achieving this effect. However, glass panels, windows, glass tables, and mirrors could potentially double the look of your space. Rooms that have a lot of natural light will always appear more spacious. Therefore, it is imperative to take full advantage of all natural light available. The use of glass in this way can transform small studio apartments, terrace houses, units or even freestanding houses from a cluttered claustrophobic space into an open aesthetically pleasing surrounding.

Glass Panels & Windows

Obviously it would be ideal to implement all interior design ideas before a building has been constructed, but in a majority of situations homeowners must apply new designs to existing properties. The introduction of large glass walls, partitions and bi-fold doors in contemporary architecture has contributed to the open plan style of living. By substituting internal brick or plasterboard walls with clear or translucent glass, this creates the illusion that an area is larger than it really is.

Glass Tables

The use of glass tables is becoming more popular as the transparency of glass can almost eliminate their existence. The most common application is for glass dining tables, glass coffee tables and glass side tables, where clear or translucent glass can be utilised as an alternative to timber products. A table made of glass can convert a humble piece of furniture into a showpiece with class and style. Design is only limited by ones imagination as any size or shape can be manufactured to suit any particular situation in varying types of glass. Glass table tops are also placed on top of existing timber table as protection against scratches.

Mirrors

The most economical method to deceive the human eye and help push back the walls of any room is the use of mirrors. Although the most obvious use of mirror is for bathrooms, carefully placed mirrors will reflect views, bounce extra natural light and add depth to any space. Strategic placement of full length mirrors can give the impression there may be an additional room nearby, while wall to wall mirrors will definitely enlarge a bathroom. The main consideration is, not to go overboard with the number of mirrors, which could create an amusement park type environment and think about the image your mirror is going to reflect.

There are many types of noise pollution that have an impact on the community including aircraft noise, traffic noise, industrial machinery, power tools, or even the innocent sounds of children playing. The frequency of such noises determines the impact they will have on occupants of both commercial and domestic buildings. Brick or concrete walls offer superior resistance to sound, however buildings require glass to allow natural light to penetrate inside whilst also adding to a buildings visual appeal. Recent improvements in noise reduction products have enhanced the acoustic performance of glass whilst retaining the benefits required for modern architecture. The foremost contributor to better noise control is laminated glass and insulated glass units and in some cases a combination of the two.

Laminated Glass

In addition to the safety benefits of laminated glass its PVB interlayer provides an excellent barrier against noise. A combination of different types of glass and interlayer are available to satisfy the sound dampening requirements for each particular application. Although standard laminated products offer good soundproofing qualities, specially designed laminates have been introduced which go well beyond previous levels.

Insulated Glass Units

In recent times Insulated Glass Units (IGU) have set the benchmark for energy efficient and noise control glass products. IGU’s are excellent insulators against noise pollution due to their sealed air space between two sheets of glass. Although most IGU’s used in domestic properties consist of two sheets of 3mm annealed glass, incorporating at least one layer of high performance laminated glass will greatly improve the overall results.
