Schools, early childcare centres, aged care building and retirement
villages and nursing homes
These types of premises either have many small children or elderly people residing in them, who without supervision may stumble or fall into glass panels located in these buildings. The sheer wait of numbers alone increases to possibility of accidents occurring compared to a common residential property. Unfortunately some accidents have resulted in death caused by the razor like edges of annealed glass.
The high activity of children playing in schools and early childcare centres requires all glass below 1000mm from the floor or ground level to be Grade A Safety Glass. The unstable characteristics of some elderly people make it necessary to have Grade A safety glass to an increased height of 1500mm. All other glazing must comply with other relevant parts of AS1288-2006 Glass in buildings.
