Glass in doors and side panels situated in domestic and commercial properties are required to meet the requirements of Australian Standard, AS1288-2006 Glass in buildings. Although there are some exceptions to the rule, it is necessary for these panels to be Grade A Safety Glass. These areas are considered to be at “high risk” of human impact, which can cause severe injuries by broken glass and therefore safety glass products are used to minimise this risk.
Doors
Regardless of which type, sliding, hinged, bi-fold or stacking, any door that closes a pathway dividing two areas fall into the general door classification. They are regarded as one of the highest risk areas for glass due to the frequent traffic of people. Wardrobe, bathroom, shower screen and frameless doors call for more specific safety glass relative to their application covered in AS1288-2006.
Side panels
Most panels located within 300mm of the edge of a doorway and fully framed are classified as side panels and must be Grade A Safety Glass. In the main, side panels are more likely to be subject to human impact, however there are some exceptions to the rule. Glass such as lead lights, decorated, very small and lower risk panels can be glazed with annealed glass.
